Arliss Newcomb: stone sculptor

I was a wood carver for 25 years, showing and selling work across the United States and Canada. In 1988 I met a stone sculptor on Saltspring Is., British Columbia. He gave me my first piece of stone and I haven't carved wood since.

In the spring of 1990, I was introduced to the Northwest Stone Sculptors Association. An international group of sculptors, the NWSAA is a 20 year old non-profit educational organization that promotes works of art in stone. Each July a 10 day symposium is held in Western Washington State. I have been lucky enough to work helping to make the symposium a success as a member of NWSSAs Board of Directors.

I have also been a member for the last 10 years of the Port Townsend Art Gallery.

I have been fortunate over the years to study with several very talented teachers.
Joanne Duby of Ventura, California
Sabah Al-Dhaher of the Pratt Art Institute of Seattle
George Pratt of Vancouver, B.C.
Sergio Mora of Todos Santos, Baja, Mexico
Tracy Powell of La Conner, Washington
Bee Amora of the Vermont Carving Studios

My e-mail address is armac@olypen.com.
