May Featured Artists

Port Townsend Gallery is pleased to host a local artist with great potential, Julia McHugh. Julia uses a process called photo intaglio printmaking to create evocative images.

“When I take my film into the closet in the darkroom to spool it, I wish myself luck bringing back the beauty that compelled me to try to capture it in a form I can share. There is a sense of magic and mystery that I attribute to this process. As a witch standing over a cauldron, I guess at how long and at what contrast to expose a print and swish it into the developer. When the image appears in a slightly altered state, absent of color, I have another chance to study the essence of the subject, what emotion evoked and perhaps why” says McHugh.

McHugh uses a “simple” film camera, and develops and prints her own work. She creates copper plates from selected photos and prints from the plates using water based inks on high quality natural fiber paper. “With photo intaglio printmaking, there is even greater opportunity for mystery and magic when more detail is lost in the plate making process, or added in the inking.”

McHugh is a single mother of two daughters who moved from New York to Port Townsend 18 years ago. She has had prior exhibits in the Bishop Hotel, Palace Hotel, and Sweet Laurette’s Restaurant in Port Townsend. Julia was a Centrum artist in residence in January 2008. She has been juried into local art shows and had her work published in SUN magazine and the Port Townsend Leader.
