"Explorations III" Acrylic/mixed media painting by
Susan Hazard.

Susan Hazard

Susan Hazard has practiced diverse creativity since her earliest years. After completing a long journey of education and short periods of travel through the western United States, Canada, Mexico and Hawaii, Susan traveled to Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. Her intense interest in the natural beauty of Ireland resulted in a move from her hometown of Santa Barbara, California to County Mayo in 1991. During her residence in Ireland of over three years she was involved in numerous solo art exhibitions and a number of group shows. Susan also organized and taught watercolor and oil painting classes for adults. After a move of studio and residence to the Pacific Northwest in 2005, Susan opened The Courtyard Gallery and Studio in Port Townsend in August 2006 and continues to paint vivacious and memorable gardens, land and seascapes with her unique palette knife and oils technique.

Gardens, landscapes and seascapes imagery has unlimited capability to be explored with different mediums and styles, often opening paths into new and rewarding experiences. Susan believes creativity has no boundaries, and out of this belief comes a new series, aptly entitled “Explorations.” These acrylic and mixed media pieces are stylized, symbolic and varied ventures into a new language of expression. Utilizing drawing techniques with brushes and rounded extruded threads of thick paint, the subconscious comes out

Unique basket created with recycled copper by
Sylvia White.

Sylvia White

Sylvia White is a basket maker who makes art from recycled and industrial materials. Her displays at the Port Townsend Gallery, the County library, the Northwind Arts Center and other venues have helped educate people about art made from recycled materials. Her work has been featured in three books on fiber arts. She has been invited as a guest instructor to demonstrate her techniques to fiber arts guilds in the region and across the U.S. White will be giving a series of four classes for the Sequim Arts Alliance in April. In the last three years White has entered and been accepted to dozens of invitational and juried local and regional shows, among the latest and most prestigious is the international “Beyond Basketry” show which will result in a full color book and will tour major U.S. cities from December 2008 to January 2010.

“I have lived in countries where absolutely nothing useful is thrown away. I think that experience led me to experiment with materials that most people see as “junk” and try to shape them into art that is worth saving rather than discarding” says White. Her fascination with woven materials was sparked by living in Africa during the 1960/70s. Her work is best described as free-form vessels and wall hangings from industrial materials, and traditional baskets made with non-traditional materials. Recently she has been working with metals. Some of her newer work includes sensuously shaped natural materials like driftwood combined with contrasting materials like shiny or patinaed metals, computer parts, and other industrial materials. As featured artist she will show new and unique work in March.
