June Featured Artists

Metal fusion pendant by Joanna Beachy
Joanna Beachy
Joanna Beachy is a silversmith from Marrowstone Island, and one of the founding members of Port Townsend Gallery. Beachy continues to explore the realm of metal fusion and is incorporating fine silver, as well as 14K-, 22K- and 24K-gold into her fused sterling silver pieces. Beachy’s endless fascination with kelp, and its lines and motion in the sea, are the focus of her current body of work. In addition to metals, the artist incorporates beach pebbles, gems and pearls into her jewelry pieces to offer contrast and texture.
Beachy views the technique of metal fusion as an exploration of the unpredictable. The fusion process—working with metals and heat at the point the metal surfaces are melting—includes the element of surprise. Combining “happy accidents” with other, more controlled, elements, Beachy establishes a relationship between the accidental and the planned, creating textures that blend with imagery from nature.

“Opening II” Water media painting by Jeanette Best
Jeanette Best
Jeanette Best has studied Chinese watercolor and sumi painting for many years. On a recent trip to China, Best had the opportunity to travel with a group, led by accomplished painter Yu Ming Zhu, who observed and painted with master Chinese artists. While traveling, she was moved by the sight of mountains, their mysterious mists, and the overall abundance of native vegetation. She is pleased to share artwork that was inspired by this Asian experience.
Best paints with inks and watercolors on rice paper or watercolor paper. She considers the brush stroke the essential component of the painting, and notes that her final results are a “blend of western and Chinese watercolor methods, experimentation, and whim.”
Art Demonstrations on June 21
On Saturday June 21 there will be demonstrations during the day by sculptor Arliss Newcomb and painter Miriam Lansdon.
Newcomb will show how forms evolve in stone sculpture and Lansdon will demonstrate ink drawings with watercolor washes. The demonstrations are free and all are welcome.
Where Else Can you Find P. T. Gallery Artists?
Miriam Lansdon will be the featured artist at the Tyler Street Coffee House from June 23 through August 4.
