“Sunny Daze” watercolor painting by Marti Mathis
Marti Mathis
Passionate about art from early childhood, Marti Mathis has developed a personal watercolor style that emphasizes vibrant colors and exuberant compositions. Her new work depicts stately sunflowers and bright red tulips in warm summer settings.
A significant amount of preparation time goes into each one of Marti’s paintings. She explains “I like to spend time observing nature and the world around me, looking for ways the sunlight forms designs for me to discover.” From her studies she carefully composes and draws her subjects on paper. About painting Marti says “the movement and rhythm the paint takes when it meets with wet paper is amazing. Sunlight, shadows, reflections, shapes and patterns all play important parts in my paintings.”

Ceramic art with Gingko Leaf decoration by
Lori Bernstein
Lori Bernstein
Known for the refined elegance of her black and white pottery, Lori Bernstein has recently begun to explore the use of color in her work. Bright blue, soft green and a bold red accent the geometric patterns and nature motifs that Lori carefully carves and incises onto her handmade wheel thrown pottery.
Lori’s decorating process, known as “sgraffito,” involves brushing multiple layers of colored clay onto the surface of a “leather hard” pot. Once the layers have dried to the “just right” stage, Lori begins carving her designs: waves, oak and gingko leaves, and new for this month – sunflowers. About this process, Lori notes, “I enjoy working with the smooth, leather hard clay, using colored slip against the white clay body, and watching how the surface of the pot takes on the appearance of a woodblock print. I like visual texture.”
“Froggy Bottoms Pottery,” named after the pond near her home, is Lori’s studio where she works and teaches clay classes. Her pottery is available locally at the Port Townsend Gallery and on Saturdays, at the Port Townsend Farmers Market.
