March Featured Artists

Port Townsend Gallery will showcase the acrylic paintings of Jim Daly and the pottery of Phoebe and Darby Huffman during the month of March.

“Jazz Club” acrylic painting

by Jim Daly

Jim Daly

Acrylic artist Jim Daly paints landscapes and seascapes that portray local scenes, as well as scenes from his imagination. Recently the artist has been working on a series of what he calls "People Pictures," which explores the visual world of jazz musicians. Daly uses alla prima opaque techniques, glazing, hard outlines and, lately, a bit of collage in his large, color-saturated paintings. The artist enjoys capturing a range of emotion in his work: from the serenity of a landscape to the excitement and energy of a jazz club.

Phoebe and Darby Huffman

Dynamic clay duo, Phoebe and Darby Huffman, have chosen to work in rich red clay that needs no glaze when fired to its full maturity. The Huffmans make a range of items from birdbaths and garden bells to bowls and drinking vessels. The artists explain that they are committed to “elevating items for daily living to an art form.” All the work created by this husband and wife team is frost-proof when outside or dishwasher safe when inside. During March, they will exhibit their latest creations of unglazed wine and beer-drinking vessels. In a recent, quite unscientific taste test, all happy participants agreed that the unglazed ware enhances the flavor of the spirits.

Phoebe and Darby have been married since 1976 and have always explored their individual expressions of art. Phoebe has been sculpting since she was a child, and Darby learned to throw clay in high school. Their collaborative work is a culmination of their many years together. Darby throws pots to bring forth a vessel of centered beauty for the world to use. Phoebe sculpts to bring forth the underlying essence of what she sees and feels in her world around her.
