November Theme Show
Port Townsend Gallery revisits the stylish Art Deco era in November as it features the stone sculpture of Arliss Newcomb along with the acrylic and watercolor paintings of Andrea Zeusche.
Arliss Newcomb

Art Deco Black Granite and White Jade
by Arliss Newcomb.
As Arliss Newcomb works on a sculpture, she explains that “the stone speaks to me as a form or figure emerges, and it is my wish that the finished piece will also speak to others and may be enjoyed for years to come.” Most of Newcomb’s sculptures evolve after extensive exploration of the stone from all sides. By removing only enough material for the form, while still retaining some of the natural stone, she is able to show a variety of textures in her sculpture. Newcomb’s sculptural focus for this month’s exhibit centers around the gracefully geometric shapes and lines found in Art Deco designs.
Newcomb is a 31-year resident of Port Townsend who has been sculpting in stone for 24 years. Prior to discovering stone, she was a wood carver for 25
years. The artist is a member of the Northwest Stone Sculptors Association, and her work has been exhibited nationwide, as well as in Mexico.

Andrea Zeusche
Although Andrea Zeusche is equally happy painting in watercolor or acrylic, she particularly likes the feel of working on canvas and enjoys watching a painting “grow” layer by layer. Her current work is inspired by Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose architectural designs and paintings helped define and shape the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as the

early Art Deco style. Zeusche likes Mackintosh’s use of the figure and fluid lines in his designs, and she finds acrylics to be a good medium for playing with similar shapes.
Zeusche was born and raised in New Zealand. She and her husband built their own sailboat and sailed for many years in the Pacific. In 1987, they docked in Port Townsend in time for the Wooden Boat Festival, and decided to stay. The artist is a member of the Quimper Arts Life Drawing group and is one of the original members of Port Townsend Gallery.
New Gallery Artists
Port Townsend Gallery is pleased to welcome two new member artists to its gallery: pastel artist Jeannie Fine and oil painter Dawn Sagar, both of Port Townsend. Fine and Sagar were juried into the gallery at the monthly membership meeting on September 30.
Jeannie Fine uses soft pastels on sanded paper to capture the shimmering beauty of the landscapes that surround her every day. Dawn Sagar’s oil paintings evoke a sense of changing weather conditions and transient moments in our dwindling open spaces and endangered landscapes.
