May Featured Artists

Port Townsend Gallery features the artwork of “two Jims” during the month of May: the photography of James Arrabito and the acrylic paintings of Jim Daly. Meet them at a reception during Gallery Walk, Saturday, May 2nd, from 5:30-8pm. Light refreshments will be served. Port Townsend Gallery is located at 715 Water St.

James Arrabito

“Eiffel Tower” photograph by James Arrabito

Photographer James Arrabito finds a personal photographic reward in being the first person to see an image through his viewfinder. The prints he creates from this satisfying first glimpse are his way of sharing that fraction of a second with everyone else.

Arrabito, who feels that “light is everything,” has enjoyed a 40-year love affair with the qualities of light. He explains that “this passion is carried over to both image pre-visualization” as well as “storytelling in a fraction of a second.” The photographer finds that “the image speaks with either the addition or subtraction of light.”

Arrabito considers himself part of the photographic old-school generation, still preferring to expose film through either his Medium-Format or 4x5-inch Camera. However, he reports that he has recently “made the leap into digital with the addition of a Digital Nikon and a Digital Back for my Hasselblad 503 system.” Arrabito still shoots full-frame, and most of his images are one-off. He prefers to use Photoshop sparingly for such things as image clean-up, avoiding any wild digital color switches. He admits that he will oftentimes “leave in the little uglies, but overall presentation is utmost.”

Jim Daly

Acrylic artist Jim Daly prefers not to be pinned down to one technique or one type of subject matter for his paintings. He explains: “I paint people, seascapes, landscapes, buildings, boats, and just about anything except still-lifes.”

“Backlit Tree” acrylic painting by Jim Daly

Acrylic artist Jim Daly prefers not to be pinned down to one technique or one type of subject matter for his paintings. He explains: “I paint people, seascapes, landscapes, buildings, boats, and just about anything except still-lifes.” This month, he will be displaying his local landscapes and seascapes that include familiar views such as Beckett Point, Adelma Beach, Kah-Tai Lagoon, the Boatyard, and Marrowstone Island. When considering what to paint, Daly feels that “the Port Townsend area is so rich in exciting material that it is hard to pick and choose.” Though his paintings are representational in nature, they also capture a spirit that pure realism cannot: a feeling, mood, emphasis, or simply a different way of viewing the subject matter. Daly enjoys painting his landscapes out of doors and “editing” them in his studio. If he is forced to work from a photograph due to the vagaries of weather, he likes to interpret the subject matter broadly.

May Garden Art

Port Townsend Gallery Courtyard

As plants and flowers emerge after a long cold winter, the Port Townsend Gallery is also growing garden art in a gorgeous outdoor setting. The artists who are currently showing their work in the courtyard are: Dennis McDaniel – ceramic sculptures and water features, Jolene Sunding – sculpted leaf bird baths and mosaic masks, Susan Hazard – whimsical tea cup and watering can poles, Marc Perrett – birdhouses, and Arliss Newcomb – rock sculptures.
