Wanda Mawhinney

“The Splendor of Hidden Roots” acrylic,
by Wanda Mawhinney.
Abstract painter Wanda Mawhinney works in vibrant colors, unusual designs and eye-catching compositions. In her career as an experimental artist, Mawhinney has worked extensively in acrylics and collage enhanced with diverse textures. Recently, the artist has become fascinated with the buttery blending of colors that is possible with oil paint.
In search of a fresh perspective from which to paint, Mawhinney asked herself, “What would I see when I look down?” This led her to new visions of landscapes, water reflections, and what may appear underfoot. A new series of large and small canvases in oils and acrylics, which Mawhinney calls “Views From Above,” will be exhibited throughout August.
After moving to Port Ludlow from Arizona four years ago, Mawhinney finds her color palette beginning to change. She now incorporates more blues and greens, although her passion for warm southwestern reds, oranges and yellows still remains.

Sylvia White

Wall hanging of recycled materials
by Sylvia White.
Living in Africa during the 1960s and 70s sparked Sylvia White’s fascination with woven materials. The artist has been making baskets for many years, and in the last ten has been stimulated by the color, texture and flexibility of industrial materials. White’s intense curiosity led her to wonder how these scrap materials might be shaped into artistic pieces worth saving, rather than end up as more junk in a landfill. The artist haunts places that might discard metals, strapping tape, pipe fittings, wire, cans, computer parts, and paper. Simply handling and exploring these cast-offs leads White to experiment with new concepts and structural approaches to her art form.
During August, White will display a variety of her distinctive contemporary weavings, including baskets, wall hangings, and a vessel which has returned from a national exhibit entitled “Beyond The Basket.” The artist is also featuring some recent pieces she created with colorful computer connector wire.
