April Featured Artists
Port Townsend Gallery features the pastel paintings of Carol Heath Stabile and the found-object art of Mary Lynn Maloney during the month of April. The featured artists deem that this grey time of year calls for color and sunshine. Their mission is to bring it to the gallery, via their playful artwork. Meet the artists at a sunny reception during Gallery Walk, Saturday, April 4th, from 5:30-8pm. Colorful refreshments will be served.

“Patio” pastel painting, by Carol Heath Stabile
Carol Heath Stabile
Long-time Port Townsend resident Carol Heath Stabile knows how locals are craving sunshine right about now, so she offers a new collection of her artwork for those who are not heading off to Costa Rica for a few weeks. Stabile thought about how to create the look of sun in her work, whether a sun-soaked patio floor, or streams of light falling across a tabletop. With this in mind, she began many of her pieces with an iridescent gold underpainting on a sanded surface. She then used a color-saturated palette of soft pastels, a medium she has worked in for 14 years. Stabile “loves the depth of color and the energy that can be captured in a pastel painting.”
Stabile is also showing her original paper bead bracelets, featuring such diverse and fun elements as a Kuwait newspaper, wallpaper samples, and a tootsie roll. Additionally, she will exhibit some whimsical collages with pastel details, and a collection of favorite aerial photos she has recently taken. These photos have been, as she puts it “digitally artified.” Stabile feels that her approach to art has always been playful and upbeat. She hopes her work brings a smile to the viewer, and now some sunshine as well.

Mary Lynn Maloney

“Sunflower” mixed media assemblage,
by Mary Lynn Maloney.
Found-object artist Mary Lynn Maloney has been challenging herself to create some larger work lately, and is happy to unveil some of her new art this month. Several of Maloney’s pieces combine scrap metal and wood, and the artist attempts to play the textures and subtle shine of the elements off each other to create warm, playful, dreamlike compositions. Driven by thoughts of spring, Maloney has focused on transforming some of her metal objects into floral constructions. What were once humble wrenches, drain covers, vents or drawer knobs have metamorphosed into a proud sunflower, or a small meadow of wildflowers.
Maloney, always on the lookout for objects to use in her collage or assemblage constructions, is drawn to shiny things, as well as items that are worn out or a little rusty, things that carry a past, some baggage, and the lovely patina of time. These odd, disparate pieces come together in Maloney’s artwork, some dropping their former selves, some still carrying remnants of their old meaning.
